A resolution supporting initiatives to guarantee the safety of artificial intelligence is adopted by the UN
The first global resolution on artificial intelligence (AI) was overwhelmingly adopted by the UNGA on March 21, 2024. It calls on governments to uphold human rights, secure personal information, and keep an eye out for any potential threats associated with AI.
• The nonbinding resolution was proposed by the United States of America(USA) and was cosponsored by 123 countries, including China, Cuba, and Russia.
Note: The draft resolution emphasizing the respect, protection, and advancement of human rights in the design, development, and use of AI was approved without a vote.
Main Points:
1. The resolution's main goal is to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN by 2030, which include: Ending global hunger and poverty Improving health globally Providing high-quality secondary education for all children Achieving gender equality.
2. This is the first time the UNGA has adopted a resolution on regulating an emerging field.
Why Important:
1. The resolution guarantees that developing nations will have access to technology and the capacity to benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) in ways including illness detection, flood prediction, and workforce training.
2. It aims to remove the digital divide between rich
developed countries and poor developing countries.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the assembly just before the vote. "The two have developed and grown simultaneously. As the United Nations and artificial intelligence (AI) finally come together today, we have the chance and the duty to decide as a cohesive global community to control this technology rather than allow it to rule us."
